Training offer

Organic farmer

Population growth, dwindling water reserves and global warming pose a major challenge to food production and drinking water supply in Benin.

In order to overcome these difficulties, there is an urgent need to establish an efficient and resource-efficient agricultural economy. Farmers therefore have a crucial role to play in ensuring that the country’s population has a sustainable supply of sufficient food and in maintaining and increasing the supply of drinking water.

Regenerative farming makes it possible to increase the harvest yield by preserving natural resources and to raise the level of groundwater through appropriate measures. For example, the use of natural fertilizers, crop rotation and soil cover lead to a long-term increase in soil fertility. Also, by protecting the soil from drying out, it can absorb more rainwater so that the groundwater level is raised.

Among the main tasks of a organic farmer are:

  • Planting, care and harvesting all types of useful plants and fruits
  • Fabrication and application of biological fertilizer and pesticides
  • Food conservation
  • Preserving creation through the respectful use of natural resources and strengthening them

During 18 months the students are taught in regenerative, ecological agriculture and horticulture. In addition to theoretical contents about the production and use of fertilizer and plants our focus in training is on practice.

The students are out in the fields of EPAL every day to collect insights in how organic cultivation of crop plants, by using our methods, enhances yields and spare natural resources.

Furthermore, the students are shown the correct analysis of the yields, which plants are usefully planted during which season of the year and how daily care leads to success.

The subject-specific focuses of the training are

  • Fabrication and application of biological compost as fertilizer
  • Rotation in cultivation and regeneration of soils
  • Natural protection of plants against parasites
  • Correct irrigation and cultivation methods
  • Information about contents of plants and how to use them in healthcare
  • Food conservation
